About Us:
Madison is facing a housing shortage. Rising rents, limited supply, and inequitable policies are making it harder for our neighbors to stay in the communities they love. Madison for More Neighbors aims to address these challenges as a grassroots coalition fighting for equitable, pro-housing policies so everyone has a place to call home.
What We Believe:
More Options, More Stability
Flexible housing choices let residents downsize, earn income, or live near family without leaving the neighborhoods they love.
Neighborhood-Scale Solutions
Families from all backgrounds deserve housing that meets their needs while keeping them connected to culture, roots, and neighbors.
Homes for Every Stage of Life
From starter homes to multigenerational living, Madison needs affordable, accessible options so every family can thrive.
The Challenge:
Madison is at a crossroads. Our city is projected to grow by more than 100,000 residents by 2050 - a 30% increase in population in just a few decades. And if history tells us anything, that projection may even be an undercount.
Our housing supply simply hasn’t kept pace. Since the Great Recession, we’ve welcomed thousands of new residents, but we haven’t built enough homes to match that growth. This imbalance is driving up costs and straining our neighborhoods.
The consequences are already here. From 2020 to 2023, Madison experienced the fastest rent increases of any major U.S. city - more than 30% in just three years. Even though rents have cooled slightly, families still feel the squeeze because demand continues to outstrip supply. Beyond affordability, homeless shelters are full, vacancy rates for rental housing are critically low, and too many people are left without options, forcing them to leave the neighborhoods and communities they’ve built.
